I Kings 3:10-15

In Mark 11:24 Jesus tells the disciples that, if we have faith, God will give you what you pray for.  Now this verse has spawned a lot of controversy and has even been used by some to form a heretical view of the Christian life.  The interesting question in this verse is this; what will we ask for if we have faith?  A person who has no faith or no close walk with God will be tempted to ask for every little earthly desire he or she might have.  But, if you truly have faith, what will your heart long for?

Our reading today shows us what a person who fears God will ask for.  Solomon could have asked for anything, but he asked for that which his faith moved him to seek.  He knew what he was and what he needed.  And so he does not ask for all his earthly desires, but asks instead for wisdom to do the work that God had given him to do.  He wanted to be a faithful servant, and so this governed his request.

Now there is another verse containing the teachings of Jesus that comes into play here.  In Matthew 6:33 we read that if we seek God’s kingdom first, then all these things will be given to you as well.  And that is exactly what Solomon experiences here.  He sought God and His kingdom first, and then God comes and says he is going to give Solomon all the desires of his heart that he did not ask for.  God will indeed bless His people, but only when we seek Him rather than His blessings.

So seek God first today and let Him give to you what He wants to give, in His own time and way.
