The Old Testament people of God had very specific directions on how they were to construct the Tabernacle, in which God would be worshiped and sacrifices for sin would be made. Our reading today reminds the reader about the way the Tabernacle was made. There was no planning committee, no changing of the plan, no running into road blocks, and no cost over runs. They received this plan right from heaven, complete and perfect.
We are building our own worship center now, and we are basically able to do it any way we want. Why the difference? Because the Old Testament tabernacle was a picture of what Jesus was going to do when He came and died on the cross. But now that Jesus has made the once and for all sacrifice, and has gone to the heavenly Temple, at the right hand of God the Father, this task is finished. Now God’s people are the true Tabernacle, for He dwells within us through His Holy Spirit. Now, any place two or three are gathered in the Lord’s name, there He is in our midst (Matthew 18:20). It is not the worship center that is the big deal, but the worshipping people. As it says in John 4:23 –
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
May it be our heart’s desire to be the true Church of Jesus Christ, not focused on buildings and structures, but focused on God and adoring His name.
