Jeremiah 31:31 is the passage to remember. Jeremiah 31:31 is one of the key references in the Old Testament that enables us to understand God’s plan of salvation. Hebrews 8:8-12 is a word for word quote from Jeremiah 31:31-34. What this passage says, in essence, is that the Old Testament Law was never intended to be the permanent way that people would be saved and walk with God. It had some inherent shortcomings. We don’t have to make animal sacrifices today because, when Jesus came, He fulfilled, completed, and replaced the Old Testament Law. Now people are saved through faith in Jesus, and He puts His Law right inside of us, so that we will truly know God and walk with Him in obedience and love. The motivation comes from inside of us, rather than from outside of us.
We all certainly have the sin nature inside of us yet, pushing us away from God, but we also have God’s Law inside of us, and the Holy Spirit, and God’s love. God does not want you to walk with Him simply because you have to, or because it says so in some book. He longs for you to walk with Him because that is what is in your heart. Today, ask God to put His Law in your heart, and ask Him to move you to want to know Him and live for Him. Ask the Spirit to keep leading you in His ways. Jesus changed everything so that you would experience this reality in your life. Allow it to happen in you! Remember Philippians 2:12-13.
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
