Hebrews 12:18-29

Jesus told the story of a wealthy man who set out a huge banquet and then invited everyone to come to it.  But many people came up with excuses why they could not come, and thus they never were able to attend the Master’s banquet after that (Luke 14:15-24).  The writer of Hebrews is making the same basic point in our reading today.  “See to  it that you don’t refuse him who is speaking” he says in verse 25.

God has made a wonderful way for us to be saved and come into His eternal kingdom, much better than in the Old Testament when things were all fiery and frightening.  But just because the way is easy does not mean that we should take it lightly.  We must make sure we respond, for the day is coming when things are going to get wild again!  God is going to shake, not just the earth this time, but the whole universe (v.26).  And the only thing left standing will be the Kingdom of God.  If you are not part of the Kingdom, there will be no place left for you to stand and you will fall, right down into hell.  Frightening!

So make sure you don’t refuse him who calls you.  Are there ways in which you are holding back from God, refusing His call upon your life in some way?  Our sin nature naturally moves us to hold back from Him and thus, a big part of the Christian life involves repentance and a renewed surrender to the One who calls us.  See if there is some way in which you need to stop refusing Him today.
