Dwelling on the past is not always good nor is it something to be done overly much. But sometimes looking back at a past event, especially an event that was a very positive and very heroic, is helpful for the Christian as we live life today. The writer of the book of Hebrews calls upon his readers to look back on the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings. And then he goes on to talk about that to some extent, reminding these believers of a former time in which they had stood firm for Jesus Christ and had won the victory over fear and faithlessness. He uses this great experience in their past to exhort them and encourage them not to shrink back now in their faith in Jesus Christ, but to stand firm and to remain faithful in their daily lives.
Do you have you moment in your past that you can look back upon which was a time when you showed exceptional faithfulness to Jesus Christ? Is there a time in the years in days gone by in which you just gave yourself completely to the Lord Jesus in faithfulness, no matter the pressures that came upon you. If you do, you can use that to be an encouragement for the present day, remembering that time and calling upon the courage that you had back then to come to play upon your present situation. If you don’t have such a time in your memory banks, then it’s time to make some. There’s no better time than the present to stand strongly for Jesus Christ in some way and to create an historic past for yourself! In what way could you be brave for Jesus in the world, standing strongly in your faith, and doing hard things because you are a believer? Your future may very well need some heroic memories to inspire you at that time, to stand firm for the Lord. There is no better time than the present to make those memories!
