What is it that controls your life? Now we might be tempted to say that nobody controls my life. I do what I want! But of course that isn’t completely true. The Bible says that the lost are slaves to their own sin. Our sinful self fills us with urges that we must obey. So the person who does whatever they want is, of course, a complete slave to their own sinful heart.
Now, the Bible teaches that, though Christians still have sinful hearts, we have something else as well. We have the Holy Spirit. And it is the Holy Spirit that leads our lives. As the Spirit prompts us, we follow His lead, and are thus under the Spirit’s control. Or, at least, that’s the way it should be. As Paul says in Galatians 5:25;
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Can you see yourself living like this? The Spirit is dwelling deep within you, and you are sensing the Spirit’s pushes and prods, letting Him guide and lead you into decisions, attitudes, and activities in which God wants you to be involved?
In our reading today Paul speaks of a lot of things that can short circuit this process, one of them being drinking and drunkenness. Alcohol is a controller, and so is the Holy Spirit. Which is it going to be in our lives? Paul encourages us today not to be foolish, but to understand what the Lord’s will is, allowing the Spirit to guide us into a godly life of service to the Lord.
